How Long Can You Screen Record on iPhone? [Unlimited, but…]

How Long Can You Screen Record on iPhone

Screen recording games on an iPhone for an extended period is quite common.

Knowing how long you can screen record on your iPhone beforehand is very typical, so nothing gets missed.

Technically, there is no limit on the screen record time set by Apple, but it’s limited by the available storage and battery percentage on your iPhone.

I have done an extensive test for all iPhone models, which can screen record to find the exact amount of time you can screen record your iPhone.

Let’s dive into the details.

How Long Can You Screen Record on iPhone Before its Storage Run Out?

Before we discuss each iPhone model, let me explain what affects the size of a recorded screen video.

File Size Explained

If you are recording a video game with a ton of movements in them, the file size will be much larger than a simple tutorial with minimal movements.

This is due to the way video codecs work. Each pixel value is not stored in the file codec. Instead, the change in each pixel value is stored.

So, if two frames are the same, the file will store only one frame and repeat it while it plays back. And if there is a change in one corner of the screen, the file will only record that section and take the other data from the previous frame.

The video file will be more significant if too much goes on on the screen.

Variable FPS Rate:

Another factor that can drastically affect the overall video size and screen recording time on your iPhone is the FPS rate.

Unfortunately, iPhone does not provide any way to control the FPS rate of the screen recording, and it’s highly dynamic.

The iPhone keeps it around 30-35 fps for games and high movement, long videos. For shorter videos in which you are switching between apps and showing any feature of an iPhone, the fps can be around 40-60 fps.

Higher FPS results in larger file size.

Screen Record Video Duration on an iPhone

Now let’s discuss how long you can screen record on an iPhone.

A typical 1 min screen recording of a game on an iPhone 13 Pro Max will have a file size of 189MB at 54fps. This means a 30 min video will be 5.67GB in size.

If you have 100GB free space on your iPhone 13 pro max, you can record a maximum of 8.8 Hours of screen recording.

For games, iPhone tries to keep the FPS around 30 to reduce the file size, so I have made a complete list of all models with the size I got. The size can be different for you due to factors I explained earlier.

The below table will summarize screen record time for other iPhone Models.

Screen Recording Time in iPhone Models

Conclusion:

So what we currently understand is that iPhone, for now, does not allow to change the factors affecting the length of a screen recording video, but it also does not limit the overall length.

The length of the screen recording video highly depends on the type of material being recorded, FPS rate and video aspect ratio, and size in pixels.
